The people of Calgary has voted no to bid for the 2026 OIympic Games in a tight plebiscite, with just over 56 per cent voting no, and 43 per cent voting yes.
No Calgary Olympics founder Dan Gauld said the lead-up to Tuesday’s vote has kickstarted Calgarians into paying closer attention to municipal politics and has people asking “what kind of city do you want to live in?”
“In the end, if we’ve had a positive influence on the process — on the bid book — and people are more closely watching the whole process, then I think that’s a real positive thing,” he said.
Mayor Naheed Nenshi, who was a strong proponent of bidding for another Winter Games, admitted he was deeply disappointed late Tuesday.
“A lot of folks have said this has been a divisive process, but I reject that.
“We had passionate people talking about their community. And what they believe in … and we need to look at how we continue the conversation.”
