European championships have been plagued by embezzlement, either by injuries or by outbreaks of contamination by the new coronavirus — more or less like the Brasileirão. Together, the five main leagues in the Old Continent have accumulated 364 absences until this round.
Currently there are 87 players out of combat in the English Championship, followed by German (85 absences), Spanish (78), French (61) and Italian (53). Of the 98 teams spread across the top five leagues, only seven have an empty medical department this weekend. In an atypical season, four of the five leagues are allowing five substitutions per game - the English one is not.
The list of injured stars is long and in constant flux, having already included the talent - and the high salaries of - Piqué (Barcelona); Alphonso Davies and Kimmich (Bayern); Van Dijk and Thiago Alcântara (Liverpool); Sergio Agüero (Manchester City); Pogba (Manchester United); Ibrahimovic (Milan, photo); Bernat and Draxler (PSG); Sergio Ramos and Hazard (Real Madrid) and many others.
