The event was held at Oriental Hotel In Lagos with top executives from the ICT industry, including representatives of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), leading ICT companies and policy-makers in attendance. Speaking during the ceremony, Globacom’s Account Manager, Public Sector, Lagos Zone, Mrs. Justina Abdulateef who represented the company stated that school girls will be able to play prominent roles in the technology world in the future by taking active interest now in science subjects. She called on authorities to break the stereotypes deterring many girls from pursuing interests in Information and Communication Technology, early in life in order to create meaningful access to ICT for girls and women.According to her, women across the world are proving their mettle in different professions, adding that a number of them have distinguished themselves in many areas including engineering, medicine and other related professions hitherto dominated by men.Inspiring the gathering of hundreds of school girls from 15 prominent schools in Lagos, Mrs. Abdulateef advised: “You must, therefore, never let anyone limit your possibilities. If you set your mind to it, there is nothing you cannot achieve as a girl”, adding that they should diligently prepare themselves to study mathematics, engineering, computing and other related fields.“The growth potential is therefore enormous for ICT professionals, and there are many areas you can decide to focus on. You could choose to be a software developer, a webmaster, web designer, animator or data analyst, among many others”, Abdulateef advised. In her speech, the Chief Executive Officer of eBusiness Life, organisers of the event, Mrs. Ufuoma Daro commended Globacom for backing the initiative for the second year running. She stated that initiatives aimed at empowering the womenfolk deserve the support of corporate entities in the country, adding that they are critical to the overall development of the nation. The post Again, Glo celebrates Girls in ICT Day appeared first on Linda Ikeji Blog.
