Ben Ayade of Cross River state Governor has rejected the reports of him planning to join the All Progressives Congress (APC), according to The Punch reports.
Okoi Obono-Obla, a member of the APC in Cross River state claimed that the Governor has been begging to leave his party, which is the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) inorder to cross carpet to the All progressive party(APC)
But in a statement made Ayade’s chief press secretary, Christian Ita, on Thursday, March 3, the governor says he is a “full and committed member” of the PDP and has no intention to dump his party.
Ayade says he has no intention of joining the APC regardless of his good relationship with President Buhari
According to Ita, it is APC members in the state that were desperately trying to persuade the governor to “join their party following his sterling performance since assuming office.”
Ita furtherly said the fact that Ayade has a very good relationship with President Muhammadu Buhari. He also dismissed claims by Obono-Obla that the governor was behind the declaration of one Venatius Ikem wanted by the police over alleged theft of government property and attempted murder.
The statement reads: “In a recent briefing with newsmen, the governor stated in very clear terms that he is a member of the PDP. The fact that the governor has a very good relationship with President Buhari does not, in any way, suggest he wants to join the APC.
“For the avoidance of doubt, Governor Ayade has no hand in the declaration of Venatius Ikem wanted for alleged theft and attempted murder by the police.
“The APC claim is, therefore, an attempt to blackmail the governor. Rather than try to distract the public by maligning the governor, I urge Obla, who claims to be a lawyer, to advise his client to honour the invitation of the police and clear his name if he is innocent.
“I will also advise Obla that he should devote his energy towards the cleansing of his party in the state which has now become a haven for outlaws.”
Ayade in a chat with newsmen at Aso Rock, had expressed his support for Buhari’s anti-corruption crusade, describing it as perfect.
The governor, made the statement at a time members and the leadership of his party were blaming Buhari of partisanship in the anti-corruption war.
